Information about our English as a Second Language Program

EAL/D students are learning English as an additional language or dialect other than English and require additional support to develop proficiency in Standard Australian English (SAE) language.

EAL/D learners include:

With approximately 20% of our student population identifying as EAL/D learners, we ensure that we create and maintain supportive learning environments, assess student needs, monitor and report on achievement and plan for and implement effective teaching and learning.

At MPSS, we employ tailored supports and appropriate adjustments, to ensure that our EAL/D learners can access the Year Level curriculum and continue to develop in the knowledge and development of Standard Australian English.

 We do this by:

  • Identifying the individual needs of our EAL/D students in order to address barriers to learning to ensure that they can access their learning environment, engage in learning and demonstrate what they know and can do
  • Including targeted supports in the classroom during the teaching and learning cycle
  • Using in-class EAL/D teacher aide support to assist with individual needs and goals
  • Using in-class small group support from the classroom teacher and EAL/D teacher aides to cater for student needs
  • Catering for students with little or no Standard Australian English by delivering intensive teaching and support using a research-based structured EAL/D program centring on Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing
  • Including our Prep EAL/D students in a Prep Oral Language small group program, if required
  • Monitoring and documenting each EAL/D student's acquisition of Standard Australian English proficiency across the macro-skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, every six months, using the Bandscales State Schools (Queensland) for English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) learners.
