Reading to Learn (R2L) is the teaching and learning
methodology used at Middle Park State School. Through R2L we aim to
support every student to read and write challenging texts at their grade level.
The strategies are based on three core principles:
-
Reading is a fundamental mode of learning in primary and secondary school. Therefore explicit teaching of reading needs to be integrated with teaching the curriculum at all levels, and all teachers need skills to teach reading and writing in their subject areas.
- All students can and should be taught the same level of skills in reading and writing across the school curriculum so that the gap between more and less successful students narrows, instead of widening over the school years.
- Learning takes place when teachers support students to do learning tasks that are beyond their independent assessed abilities, thereby allowing for learning activities to be designed to support all students to succeed at the same high level.
